Pt 6 - Practice What You Hear

James 1:19-25 This is the final message in the six-part Signature Series that was delivered on the 10th anniversary of Lakeside Bible Church. As such, there is no better way to conclude the series than with a passage from the Book of James that deals with putting into practice what we hear from God's Word. Within this context, perhaps the single verse that best defines our passion at Lakeside Bible Church is verse 22 of Chapter 1: "But prove yourselves doers of the Word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves." - NASB It is the hope of Pastor Ramey that hearing this series will stir the body up by way of reminder about the core passions and commitments of this church. In this morning's passage, James explained the TWO WAYS we must react to God's Word in order for it to plant itself deep in our hearts where it can grow and flourish and produce the kind of changes in our lives that God desires. We must 1. BE RECEPTIVE - ACCEPT IT (vv. 19-21) A. Teachability (vv. 19-20) B. Purity (v. 21a) C. Humility (v. 21b) D. Hospitality (21c) E. Gravity (v. 21d) Being receptive to God's Word is marked by a willingness to receive it with an eager, teachable, and humble heart. 2. BE RESPONSIVE - APPLY IT (vv. 22-25) A. The Exhortation (v. 22) B. The Illustration (vv. 23-25) 1. The Forgetful Hearer (vv. 23-24) 2. The Effectual Doer (v. 25) Unfortunately, when it comes to hearing God's Word, many people fall short of actually doing the things that they hear from it, for they do not practice God's Word. But the prophet Ezekiel exhorted all of us that God's Word was not only meant to be heard, but to reform us (Ezekiel 33:30-32). We are to be pitied if we are hearing much in the way of sound doctrine, but fail to do that which we hear. Examine your life to determine if you have true saving faith. "Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and Observe it." - Luke 11:28
