The Sparkling Allure of Temptation

Genesis 26:1-11

THEME: It is often the case that temptation strikes unexpectedly. When I was a police officer, I never imagined I would find myself so incredibly tempted as when I discovered diamonds trapped in the soles of my boots. As Christians we can be tempted to rationalize sin and then give in to it. Often, this is followed by a compelling desire to hide our sin rather than uncover and repent of t. If we are not properly prepared to respond to temptation we might make excuses for our sin, give in to temptation, and then try to hide it. Here in Genesis 26, we find a man named Isaac who was also tempted to disobey God. This morning we will determine how to be prepared to respond properly to the sparkling allure of temptation by examining his two responses to temptation.

I. THE FIRST RESPONSE TO TEMPTATION: Walk the Diamonds Back. (vv. 6)

II. THE SECOND RESPONSE TO TEMPTATION: Walk the Diamonds Out. (vv. 7-11)

III. THE PROPER RESPONSE TO TEMPTATION: Walk the Diamonds Back When Tempted

What are the temptations you most often face? What vests will you begin to “treasure in your heart” so that you will be better prepared to obey God in the face of temptation? How will you practically allow God’s Word to “talk” you into obedience in that moment?
