Sound Doctrine: The Key to Scriptural Strength, Health, and Depth

March 17, 2013 Speaker: Ken Ramey

Topic: Sound Doctrine Passage: Titus 2:2–10

What is the main focus behind a spiritually mature church? It is nothing less than sound doctrine. It is the key to a church’s spiritual strength, health and depth.  Very rarely will you see sound doctrine mentioned in any of the church growth books, because they believe location, facilities youth programs and worship music will have a greater impact. However, the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy and Titus to build a healthy church with mature believers by confronting false doctrine and teaching sound doctrine.
This morning, Pastor Ramey draws out three reasons from the Pastoral Epistles on why sound doctrine is vital to the health of the church.
THE JEOPARDY OF SOUND DOCTRINE
Ever since Paul’s day, Satan has countered sound doctrine with false doctrine. Paul recognizes false teachers need to be called out and silenced. Hearers will also jeopardize sound doctrine by wanting their ears tickled with comforting sermons.
THE URGENCY OF SOUND DOCTRINE
People’s souls are starving. They need to be fed with sound doctrine.  Since souls are at stake, it is critical the word of God is proclaimed with accurate precision.  Pastors must labor diligently to preach biblical truths, ensuring they are God pleasers and not man pleasers.
THE BEAUTY OF SOUND DOCTRINE
Sound doctrine is the means to an end. The goal is love. You will beautify the gospel when sound teaching produces sound living. Titus 2:2-10 describes what sound doctrine looks like in the believer.
Thank God for providing pastors and teachers who have a high view of God’s word and are committed to provide correct biblical instruction in a world that wants to hear words that are pleasing and comfortable.
