Living In The Light

October 6, 2013 Speaker: Ken Ramey

Topic: Believe and Live Passage: John 8:12–30

Sunday Service
John 8:12-30
In verses 12-30, we are confronted with the only TWO OPTIONS in life when it comes to Jesus Christ; we can either live in His light or die in our sins.
1.  LIVE IN HIS LIGHT (vv. 12-20)
It is ironic that when the Light came into the world that men ran from it. We love our sin and do not want to give it up. When Jesus came, He presented Himself as the Light of the world. At the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus not only presented Himself as King of the Jews, but King of all the world. When Jesus declared Himself "I AM", He was reminding the Jews that He was the fulfillment of the Old Testament scripture, which pointed to Him as the Messiah that was to come into the world. Jesus was claiming the name of Jehovah God, and thus was claiming to be God as well as Messiah. Without Christ, man will always lack forgiveness, but those who turn from their sins to follow Him will no longer live in darkness, which is the bondage of sin. In essence, we cannot know God apart from Jesus Christ (John 17:3).
2.  DIE IN OUR SINS (vv. 21-30)
Because many Jews, including the Pharisees, rejected the Light of Christ, they were consigning themselves to live in the darkness. Those who reject Jesus Christ and His claims ultimately reject the His saving work on the cross. Because the wages of sin is death (i.e., eternal separation from God the Father; Romans 3:23), a propitiation had to be made so that men could be liberated from their bondage to sin and the God-ordained means by which men are saved is through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Indeed, the only unpardonable sin is unbelief in Christ or rejection of the work of the Holy Spirit Who was sent by God the Father when Christ's work was finished.
Thank God for rescuing you from the domain of darkness so you could proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Ask Him to cause Jesus Christ to shine through your life and use you to reach those still living in the dark.
