Between Two Thieves

Passage: Luke 23:32–43

Good Friday Service

Luke 23:32-43

In order to atone for the sins of men, Jesus was numbered with the transgresors by God the Father. As such, Jesus was put to death on the cross between two thieves. The account of the crucifixion provides us with perhaps the greatest example of two possible responses to the message brought forth by Jesus Christ. Although both thieves witnessed exactly the same thing as they hung dying on either side of Jesus, one responded in hostile rejection and unbelief, while the other responded in humble repentance and faith.

1. HOSTILE REJECTION AND UNBELIEF (vv. 19-39)

2. HUMBLE REPENTANCE AND FAITH (v. 40-43)

True salvation always results in a transformed life. The repentant thief demonstrated powerful evidence of saving faith even though his time was short. Jesus’s declaration that he was destined to join Him in paradise was confirmation that salvation is by grace through faith alone. So, we see that it is never too late to turn from your sins and put your faith in Christ.
