How Can I Be Sure I'm A Christian?

June 1, 2014 Speaker: Ken Ramey Series: Stand Alone Sermons

Sunday Service

1 John

Somewhere along the way, the assurance of salvation seems to have become lost in the church. However, it is possible to know for sure if you’re going to heaven. In fact, God wants you to know for sure whether or not you have eternal life (1 John 5:13). The apostle Paul also exhorts us to test ourselves to see if we are in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). So, how can you know for sure that you are a Christian?

The Book of 1 John gives us TWELVE TESTS OF A TRUE CHRISTIAN. You can evaluate yourself by answering true or false to these twelve questions.

NOTE: These are not things that are required of you to become saved (i.e., to become a true Christian), but rather, these are things that will be true of you if you are a true Christian.

T or F Do you enjoy fellowship with God, Jesus Christ, and other Christians? (1:1-7)

T or F Are you sensitive to sin in your life? (1:8-2:2)

T or F Do you consistently strive to obey God’s Word? (2:3-6; 5:2-3)

T or F Do you hate the world and its ways? (2:15-17)

T or F Do you long for the return of Jesus Christ and to be made like Him? (3:2-3)

T or F Do you see a decreasing frequency of sin in your life? (3:4-10)

T or F Do you sacrificially love other Christians? (3:10-18; 4:7-12, 20-21)

T or F Do you experience answered prayer? (3:21-22; 5:14-15)

T or F Do you experience the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life? (3:24; 4:13; 5:7)

T or F Can you discern between spiritual truth and error? (4:1-6)

T or F Do you believe what the Bible teaches about Jesus Christ? (5:1, 5, 9-12)

T or F Have you suffered persecution because of your faith in Christ? (3:12-13)

“These things I have written to you… in order that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13)
