Sunday Service

John 14:15-26

In order to comfort His disciples who were distraught over the thought of being separated from their Master whom they loved and depended no for everything, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to take His place and explained THREE ROLES the Holy Spirit plays in the lives of believers that the rest of the world knows nothing of.

1. He reveals and reminds us of the words of Christ (vv. 16-17a; 25-26)
The Holy Spirit is the author of the Word of God, so He knows best how to teach it and knows best how and when to reveal God’s Word to us. He gives us understanding of His truth and He also reminds believers about what they have already been taught.

2. He identifies and indwells the children of Christ (vv. 17b-20)
The God of the universe promised that He would take up residence in every believer’s heart. Wherever a believer resides, so resides the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit resides within every believer. This represents a union with not only the Holy Spirit, but also with God the Father and the Son, Jesus Christ, (Colossians). As such, we can know Jesus even better than the disciples, who were here with Him on earth!

3. He stimulates and sustains loving obedience to Christ (vv. 15, 21-24)
The best way to demonstrate our love for Christ is to live in obedience to Him - that is, His Word and His commands. We are to do this in a loving way and should not succumb to legalism.

Thank the Father for sending His Spirit to take the place of His Son. Thank Him that while Jesus is preparing a dwelling place for us in His house in heaven, both the father and the Son have come to dwell in our hearts through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
