Sermon Summary
Jonah - God's Infinite Compassion
The account of Jonah demonstrates that God is a merciful and gracious God. Although the wicked city of Nineveh deserved to be crushed immediately, God was patient towards them. A reluctant prophet, Jonah originally ran from God before delivering a message of repentance to the nation of Nineveh.
The Book of Jonah can be divided into FOUR SCENES:
1. Jonah’s Defiance
2. Jonah’s Repentance
3. Jonah’s Compliance
4. Jonah’s Petulance
In a broader context, Jonah is a story of God's loving concern for all people. Nineveh, the great Assyrian menace to Israel, is representative of the Gentiles. Correspondingly, stubbornly reluctant Jonah represents Israel's unwillingness to share the Lord's compassion with the nations. But the larger scope of God's purpose for Israel was that she might rediscover the truth of his concern for the whole creation and that she might better understand her own role in carrying out that concern.
How will you respond to God’s calling? How will the Church respond to God’s call for compassion for the lost? As those who have experienced God’s compassion and mercy, shouldn’t we long to extend that same compassion and mercy toward the lost (Matthew 9:36)?
