Zephaniah - God’s Certain Judgment

Zephaniah’s main theme is the coming of the day of the Lord, when God will severely punish the nations, including apostate Judah. Zephaniah portrays the stark horror of that ordeal with the same graphic imagery that was typical of the Old Testament prophets. But he also makes it clear that God will yet be merciful toward his people, and like many other prophets, he ends his pronouncements of doom on a positive note. Judah will one day be restored by Yahweh, the divine King of Israel.

The Book of Zephaniah can be divided into two parts:

1. The Day of Desolation (Ch 1 - 2:8)

2. The Day of Deliverance (Ch 2:9 - 3:20)

Has anybody been warning you about something sinful in your life? Have you been behaving in an unrepentant way in the face of repeated warnings? Don’t be the nation of Israel or the City of Jerusalem by not heading the warnings of God. Do not ignore the warnings of God delivered by the people of God. If you do, you will end up experiencing the discipline of God. But if you seek the Lord, humble yourself, confess your sins and repent, the Lord Himself will protect you when His day of judgment comes.
