Ephesians 5:18-21
The Holy Spirit though the Apostle Paul commanded every believer to be filled with Him and described what a Spirit-filled believer looks and acts like.
1. THE COMMAND: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?
•Imperative = Not just a good suggestion, but a command to obey
•Passive = Not something you can do yourself, but done by the Holy Spirit
•Present = Not something you do once or every once in a while, but all the time
•Plural = Not just for a select group of super-spiritual saints, but for every believer
2. THE CONDITIONS: HOW DO YOU GET FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?
•Don’t quench or grieve Him (1 Thessalonians 5:19; Ephesians 4:30)
•Yield yourself to Him (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Romans 12:1)
•Depend on Him (Galatians 5:16-17)
•Dwell on His Word (Colossians 3:16)
•Thirst for the glory of the One who sent Him (John 7:37-39; 16:14)
3. THE CONSEQUENCES: HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?
•Joyfulness (Ephesians 5:19; Matthew 15:18)
•Thankfulness (Ephesians 5:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:18)
•Submissiveness (Ephesians 5:21; Philippians 2:3-4)
Remember, the Holy Spirit is invisible but His work is not (cf. John 3:8). When the fruits of being filled with the Holy Spirit are evident in your life, you can have the confidence that you are Spirit-filled/controlled.
Thank God for the filling ministry of the Holy Spirit. Express to the Holy Spirit that you desire your life to be a glove for His hand to fill and use to accomplish great and mighty things for His glory.
