The Wondrous Word

January 4, 2015 Speaker: Ken Ramey

Topic: The Scriptures Passage: Psalm 19:7–11

Psalm 19:7-11

Like a master poet, David strung together SIX STATEMENTS describing the Scriptures that should inspire THREE RESPONSES to God’s Word.

SIX STATEMENTS:

1. The Bible is PERFECT and produces CONVERSION (v. 7a)
The Word of God has the power to revive or regenerate the soul (Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 1:23).

2. The Bible is TRUSTWORTHY and provides INSTRUCTION (v. 7b)
Scripture serves as God’s witness to us as to Who He is and what He expects of us (Exodus 25:21; 2 Peter 1:16; 2 Timothy 3:15).

3. The Bible is RIGHT and produces JUBILATION (v. 8a)
The Bible gives detailed instructions for the practical aspects of everyday life. These instructions are given for righteous living, which is cause for great joy and happiness (Jeremiah 15;16; Luke 11:28).

4. The Bible is PURE and provides DIRECTION (v. 8b)
Because God loves us, He gives us commandments through His Word. These commands are intended to provide clarity during times of darkness and confusion (Psalm 119:105).

5. The Bible is CLEAN and produces EXPECTATION (v. 9a)
Scripture causes us to have reverential respect for God (Deuteronomy 4:10). It is without fault or blemish (Psalm 12:6) and it endures forever (Isaiah 40:8; Matthew 5:18, 24:35). And like God, His Word is unchanging.

6. The Bible is TRUE and produces CONSECRATION (v. 9b)
The Word of God is God’s standard for judging us. It is the sole source of truth and produces righteousness in those who submit their lives to it (Psalm 138:2).

THREE RESPONSES:

1. TREASURE IT (i.e., God’s Word is valuable)
It reflects a high view of God and His Word (Psalm 119:11, 14, 72, 127).

2. TASTE IT (i.e., God’s Word is enjoyable)
King David considered reading Scripture to be a sweet and satisfying experience (Psalm 119:103); Job also treasured God’s Word (Job 23:12).

3. TRUST IT (i.e., God’s Word is dependable)
God’s Word warns us against the suicidal destruction of sin. It does this to keep us from sinning. It follows that obedience brings great blessing and peace.

Thank God for His wonderful Word. Ask Him to help you prize it and pour over it and live it out and give it out to others.
