Selected Scriptures

Have you ever had to deal with the disastrous results of making a decision purely based on feelings, impressions, circumstances, bad counsel, or just a gut-level hunch? In this morning’s message, Pastor Ramey teaches on the subject of God’s will for your life. In this message, we see that God’s will can be divided into TWO DOCTRINAL CATEGORIES which when clearly and carefully differentiated leads to THREE PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS that are helpful when it comes to discerning the will of God for our lives.

A. TWO DOCTRINAL CATEGORIES OF GOD’S WILL

1. GOD’S DECRETIVE WILL (i.e., GOD’S DECREES) - Concealed Will Unknown To Us Which Cannot Be Disrupted

[See Job 42:2; Psalm 115:3; Proverb 16:9, 33, 20:24; Isaiah 46:8-11; Ephesians 1:11; Romans 8:28; 11:33-36]

2. GOD’S DIRECTIVE WILL (i.e., GOD’S DIRECTIONS) - Revealed Will Known By UsCan Be Disregarded

This is God’s revealed plan for what everyone should believe and how everyone should live (Deuteronomy 30:11-14).

[See 1 Timothy 2:3-4; Ephesians 5:6-17; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; 5:16-18; 1 Peter 2:13-15; 4:19]

B. THREE PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS REGARDING GOD’S WILL

1. We should strive to know the Word of God rather than the will of God.
When we focus on God’s decretive will, we are trying to figure out something that God never intended for us to know until after the fact (Proverbs 20:24; Isaiah 55). We should instead focus on God’s directive will (i.e.l, His Word) instead (James 4:13).

2. We should not try to figure out God’s specific/individual will for our lives.
God does not provide for us to individually know His will, although He does have a specific will for each of us (Acts 14:26). He does, however, expect us to figure out His specific will for our lives. He gives us general direction through His Word.

3. We cannot miss or mess up God’s will for our lives.
You cannot miss God’s decretive will because He only has one plan for your life and it will be carried out no matter what. Moreover, although we are able to violate His directive will, there is no way for us to change His decretive will. What we mean for evil, God can work for good (Romans 8:28).

Thank God that His decretive will for your life will always be fulfilled. Ask Him to grant you the grace to always follow His decretive will for your life.
