When All You Have Seems Not Enough

Psalm 73

In this refreshingly honest psalm, Asaph shared how he secretly struggled with the goodness of God in light of the prosperity of the wicked in order to show us how stupid it is to envy them since we have something infinitely greater than they do, which nothing on earth compares. This sneak peak into God’s sanctifying work in Asaph’s life can be divided into two parts:

1. ASAPH’S ENVIOUS DESCENT (vv. 2-16)
Even though Asaph knew that God is good, it seemed that evil and wicked people were prospering, which led him to envy and caused him to question the goodness God and the way in which God was treating him compared to the arrogant and wicked. He erroneously surmised that living a chaste life was a huge waste of time.

2. ASAPH’S GLORIOUS ASCENT (vv. 17-28)
When Asaph quit wrestling with God and returned to fellowship with Him, his spell of derangement came to an end. Asaph began to realize what the ultimate end of the evil and wicked would be. The prosperity of the wicked is a precarious existence and is short lived. Asaph realized that the wicked were to be pitied, because the life that they lead will end like a dream upon awakening. Moreover, Asaph realized that his behavior was like that of a dumb animal that lacks sense. But he also realized that God was always with him through his derangement and that His grace was sufficient to carry him through that period.

Thank God He is gloriously, all-satisfying to which nothing on this earth compares. Pray that He would become your magnificent obsession and you would seek your joy in Him and Him alone.
