The Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ - Part 3
Philippians 3:12-16

THEME: Paul’s relentless pursuit of conformity to Christ is the best example in the Bible that there is more to being a Christian than just the initial experience of coming to faith in Christ. God’s plan of salvation involves far more than simply saving us from death and hell; He saved us to make us like Jesus. Being a Christian is not only about coming to know Christ; it’s ultimately about being conformed to the image of Christ. The whole of the Christian life is essentially a quest for Christlikeness. Every Christian should want to be work to be as much like Christ as humanly possible. That was Paul’s greatest ambition for Himself and those he led to Christ and discipled. From his explanation and example of pursuing Christ in verses 12-16, we can discern SIX WINNING ATTITUDES that we must have in order to be more and more like Christ in every area of our lives.

1. PAUL’S APPRAISAL OF HIS PAST (vv. 7-9)

2. PAUL’S ASPIRATION FOR HIS FUTURE (vv. 10-11)

3. PAUL’S ATTITUDE IN THE PRESENT (vv. 12-16)

NOTE: In order for us to be conformed to Christ, there are a number of things we must know and do:

Realize why you were saved to begin with (vv. 12-13a)

Admit that you still have a long way to go (vv. 12-13a)

Forget about the past; stay focused on the prize (v. 13b)

Pursue Christ with every fiber of your being (v. 14)

Remember you are not in this alone (v. 15)

Don’t ever let up; stick with it no matter what (v. 16)

Thank God that while you are not all you need to be, at least you are not what you used to be. Ask Him to grant you determination and concentration in your ongoing quest for Christlikeness.
