Then Sings My Soul

Selected Scriptures

THEME:  We are wired to sing. A quick survey of the Scriptures reveals why we should sing and how we should sing, which is one of the clearest indications of how grateful we are for what God has done for us in Christ and how glad we are for the gospel.

1. A SURVEY OF SINGING IN TEH OLD TESTAMENT

  • Moses and Miriam's Song (cf. Ex 15:1-2, 20-21)
  • Deborah and Barak's Song (cf. Judges 5:1-3)
  • David's Song (cf. Sam 22:1-3, 50-51)
  • Levite's Song (cf. 1 Chronicles 6:31-32; 16:4-13, 23-24, 33; 20:18-25; 25:1, 6-7; 2 Chronicles 29:25-30)
  • Psalmist's Song (cf. Psalm 5:11; 7:17; 9:1-2; 13:5-6; 18:46-50; 21:13; 27:4-6; 30:2-5, 10-12; 33:1-3; 40:1-3; 47:6-8; 51:14-15, 57:7-11; 59:16-17; 61:8; 63:6-7; 66:1-4; 67:1-4; 68:3-4; 71:22-23; 84:1-2; 89:1; 90:14; 92:1-4; 95:1-2)

2. A SURVEY OF SINGING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

  • Jesus sang with His disciples (cf. Mt 26:30; Mark 14:26)
  • Paul and Silas sang in the Philippian jail (cf. Acts 16:25)
  • We are to sing with the spirit and the mind (cf. 1 Corinthians 14:15)
  • James told us to sing praises if we are cheerful (cf. James 5:13)
  • Heaven is filled with singing (cf. Revelation 5:6-10; 15:2-3)

[See Ephesians 5:18-19; Colossians 3:16] A theology of singing

Praise and thank God for who He is and what He has done for you through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ. Ask Him to restore to you the joy of your salvation and grant you a genuine gladness for the gospel that will accurately represent the greatness of the gospel to a lost and dying world which so desperately needs to experience its transforming power.
