The Sanctifying Spirit

April 28, 2019 Speaker: Ken Ramey Series: Romans

Passage: Romans 8:1–11

Paul's confession of his ongoing internal battle with remaining sin in Chapter 7 was intended to set up his readers for what he said in Chapter 8.  The way to experience victory over indwelling sin is relying on the power of the indwelling Spirit.  The moment we became a Christian, the Spirit of God indwells us and serves as our invisible helper for the rest of our lives here on earth.  It is the permanent, abiding presence of the Holy Spirit that enables us to be and do all that God wants us to be and do.  It should come as no surprise that one of the primary roles of the Holy Spirit is to help us be holy; to sanctify us.  So it is only appropriate for Paul to introduce the subject of the indwelling Holy Spirit at this point in the letter to the believers in Rome as he was addressing the topic of sanctification.  Here in vv. 1-11, Paul explained six blessings/benefits that the Holy Spirit provides for us or produces in us.

1. The Holy Spirit comforts us with the hope of the gospel. (Romans 8:1)

2. The Holy Spirit delivers us from sin and death. (Romans 8:2-3)

3. The Holy Spirit enables to obey God's Law (Romans 8:4)

4. The Holy Spirit changes our dispostions and inclinations (Romans 8:5-8)

5. The Holy Spirit confirms that we belong to Christ (Romans 8:9)

6. The Holy Spirit animates and resurrects our mortal bodies (Romans 8:10-11)
