Coming Clean

August 30, 2020 Speaker: Ken Ramey Series: Stand Alone Sermons

Topic: Confession Passage: Psalm 32:1–11

THEME: We all know what it’s like to sin and then try to cover it up. The longer we conceal it the louder our conscience pulsates within us and we become paranoid suspecting that others know about our sin. The guilt becomes so all-consuming we can hardly stand it. At times we feel so guilty about what we’ve done that we think God will never forgive us. In this Psalm, David used TWO MEANS to teach us the wisdom of confessing our sin to a loving, forgiving God so we can enjoy God’s peace and protection that comes by living a life with nothing to hide.

1.) David Replays Vital Lessons He Learned About Coming Clean (vv. 1-5)

a.Result of Coming Clean (vv. 1-2)

b.Resistance to Coming Clean (vv. 3-4)

     c. Response to Coming Clean (v. 5)

2.) David Relays Vital Lessons He Learned About Coming Clean (vv. 6-11)

a.) Response to Coming Clean (vv. 6-7)

b.) Resistance to Coming Clean (vv. 8-9)

c.) Result of Coming Clean (vv. 10-11)

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” These questions are designed to help you apply today’s message to your life. We encourage you to thoughtfully answer these questions and discuss your answers with others. For more information about joining a Grow Group that uses these questions as the basis for weekly discussion, prayer, and accountability, please call the church office at (936) 582-1977.

  1. What causes a person to feel guilty? What are some of the common ways people try to get rid of the guilt in their lives?
  2. Read 2 Samuel 11:1-12:13. What sins did David commit and try to cover up and how did God eventually and mercifully expose his sin so he could deal with it?
  3. Read Psalm 103:12, Isaiah 38:17, and 43:25. What keeps you from confessing your sin to God? How should these verses encourage/motivate you to come clean before God whenever you sin?
  4. Read Hebrews 12:5-13. Why does God discipline us when we sin? Have you ever experienced divine discipline as a result of some sin you committed (cf. Prov. 13:15, 21)? What should you conclude if you experience no negative consequences or guilt feelings when you sin?
  5. Read Proverbs 28:13. How can you apply this principle in your life right now? Is there any secret sin you need to confess to your spouse, parents, boss, pastor/elder, discipler (cf. James 5:16)?
  6. Read Romans 4:5-8. What is the connection between David’s confession in Psalm 32 and how a  person is justified by grace through faith alone? How is the gospel plainly preached in Psalm 32?
  7. Confess any hidden sins in your life to God and ask Him to forgive you and cleanse you. Praise Him for the joy and peace He provides through the forgiveness of sin (cf. 1 Jn. 1:9).

“My sin-O the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part, but the whole,

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!”

Horatio G. Spafford, It Is Well With My Soul
