Learning The Gospel From Abraham

March 24, 2013 Speaker: Pat Abendroth

Topic: Imputed Righteousness Passage: Romans 4:1–8

Sunday Service
Romans 4:1-8
This morning, guest preacher Pat Abendroth, Senior Pastor at Omaha Bible Church in Omaha Nebraska, teaches from Romans chapter 4 about how we may be encouraged with the gospel.
In verses 1-8, we see THREE DETAILS about Abraham that lead us back to focus on the cross:
1.  The Unrighteousness (Sinfulness) of Abraham (vv. 1-3)
In terms of sinfulness, mighty men like Abraham were the rule rather than the exception (Psalm 32). They needed righteousness no less than any other sinner. We, like them, need righteousness and we are to follow their faith in God to provide righteousness.
2.  The Bible in Context (v. 3)
Faith in God is counted as righteousness (e.g., Genesis 15:6). This means faith in the righteousness of His Son Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect life and sacrificed Himself in perfect fulfillment of the will of God the Father. This also directs our focus back to Christ.
3.  The Reality of Imputed Righteousness (vv. 3-8)
Abraham was spiritually bankrupt, therefore, he required righteousness to be imputed (credited) to him by God on behalf of His Son Jesus Christ so that He may look upon sinners as righteous.
Hopefully you will find yourself refreshed and motivated by the good news of Christ's perfect life and perfect resurrection!
