Tonight, Pastor Ken begins a new series that focuses on the great purpose of God’s people: to be salt on earth. We are not removed from earth when we are saved because God intends for us to be His witnesses to the world. In Matthew 5:13, Jesus makes it clear that to be effective on this mission, we must remain salty. Moreover, if we seclude ourselves in church and fellowship only among ourselves, we are not fulfilling this mission. Using the analogy of salt, the Church can be thought of as the shaker, but we must be poured out into the world. Hopefully, we will become equipped in church so that we may go out and be salty in the community. Then we will fill our church with new believers, and they can in turn be equipped and sent forth.
Ultimately, we fail at our mission because we don’t share God’s compassion for the lost. Jonah is a graphic example of this. Jonah had received grace, but didn’t want to share it. When God used him as a witness, the result was a great revival in Ninevah. This was in spite of Jonah’s reluctance and anger at God! But just as with Jonah, God moved towards the lost. He wants to serve the lost while we often times seek to serve ourselves.
Do you have compassion for the lost? Do you love truth, doctrine and theology more than lost souls?
May we be more like Jesus, who gave us a great example in Matthew 9:36: He has compassion for the lost, notes the ripe harvest available of lost souls, and encourages us to pray for workers for the harvest.
