The Sinfulness Of Sin

Romans 7:7-13

THEME: If it wasn't for God's Law summarized in the Ten Commandments, we would never see our sin, let alone know that sin even existed. Sin exists because the Law exists and the Law exists to show us how sinful we really are. The Law and sin are closely intertwined and in this text Paul carefully untangled them and clarified the relationship between the Law and sin, and particularly how they both relate to death. Based on what Paul said about the Law in the previous six chapters, and especially what he just got done saying in verses 1-6 about us no longer being bound to the Law and death, he knew that some would naturally have questions about the purpose of the Law. He didn't want anyone to consider him an antinomian or to conclude that the Law is a bad thing, or worse, that it is sin and it is the cause of our death. So in verses 7-13, Paul went to bat for the Law and described the vital role it played in his own life which is representative of everyone's life. In order to defend the goodness of the Law, Paul described FOUR FUNCTIONS of the Law that demonstrate the grossness of our sin.

1. THE LAW PUBLICIZES SIN (v. 7)

2. THE LAW PROVOKES SIN (v. 8)

3. THE LAW PUNISHES SIN (vv. 9-11)

4. THE LAW PROVES HOW BAD SIN IS (vv. 12-13)

Thank God for being a good, holy, and righteous God. Ask Him to forgive you for sinning against Him to help you hate sin like He hates it and to flee from what He forbids.
